Track your stolen laptop online!

May 12, 2009 – 2:42 am

We have implemented a new system, accessible at http://www.graphinex.com/machinetracker/ and you may use it FREE OF CHARGE.

Simply put: Machinetracker is a Google home page that deliberately tracks your IP address, but for your own security, should your laptop be stolen.

We got the idea after we heard of a recent laptop theft of a family friend’s new Powerbook.

The system works by logging the IP address of the computer’s Internet location whenever your browser is launched and your home page is accessed. We’ll admit its not absolutely foolproof, but then again, what in life is? After investigating the commercial products that boast laptop retrieval, I have to say I was unimpressed enough to invent this free service.

Yes I said free service. How is it free? Well, Google pays to advertise to searchers, so if you use our portal to Google, then Google pays us for the searches that are performed. Costs you nothing.

Does it work?

This is just one more measure you can take prior to your laptop being stolen. If the thief is dumb enough to hook it up, he may reveal his location (via IP address) to our system, so that you may provide it to police and have him caught.

How does it work?

This system does not require for you to install any software, nor is it limited to any platform. All local information is stored in the machinetracker URL that we provide you to set as your home page. On the server level, it logs the computer’s tracking information provided each time the home page is accessed. We provide a Google home page for the convenience of our users, and to camouflage the function of the site. Later, should you feel the need to track the last known IP of the computer, simply use the look-up tool to find its last 3 reports.

Note the one thing our system does NOT track is the searches entered into the Google search request. It is not associated to your computer, stored or analyzed by our team in any way. Once you click our machinetracker google search button, you’re off and running on Google’s servers.

Lastly, you may want to set your favorite Internet browser to launch automatically when your computer is logged on. How to do this will depend on your system, but for example, in windows XP:

  • Enter your information into machine tracker, serial and email address is minimum suggested.
  • Set your customized machinetracker URL to your home page of your browser.
  • Right click on the START BUTTON and choose explore.
  • Locate and right-click/copy your browser’s shortcut.
  • Navigate to All Users/Start Menu/Programs/Startup
  • Paste the browser’s shortcut
  • Test the your system by rebooting and making sure your machinetracker home page comes up.
  • Check it out, and please send us all comments and suggestions.
