The best antivirus scanner of May ’08

May 3, 2008 – 4:45 pm

Unfortunately, the best Anti Virus scanner is debatable by even the best of geeks.

However, here are the top ones along with recommendations involving anti virus and security in general.

The first general misconception about virus scanners is that more is better. Don’t install more than one on your system, as their real-time scanning engines can conflict with each other and cause speed and stability problems within windows.

That being said, here are a few recommendations for installed solutions:

AVG is a leader due to its high detectability and free availalbility.

Avast is another leader for the beforementioned reasons.

We have not had a terrific experience with most of the other scanners on the market, esepecially the bigger, more commercial contenders with the security packages that tend to “bog down” or even get “lodged” in the system. The best solution is often a simple solution, with a backup plan.

For this reason, we recommend that no-one trust one virus scanner. If you can imagine the virus scanners as doctors, and that if you visit more than one doctor you are likely to actually figure out what is really wrong with you. Since we do NOT recommend you install a second virus scanner, this leaves only one option: online virus scanning. But which one to trust? We have done the work for you and provided a list that we update regularly.

Good luck and happy scanning.
